Ampholytes for IEF Gels<\/span><\/h4>\nCarrier ampholytes are zwitterionic molecules with a low molecular weight. They are produced synthetically and comprise a variety of different pI values. In gels containing ampholytes, a linear pH gradient is established when an electric field is applied. To achieve good separation of protein bands in isoelectric focusing, stable pH gradients with extensive and uniform buffering capacity are required. Good ampholyte mixtures include low molecular weight species with different pI values that contribute to conductivity, an important criterion to achieve reliable results and excellent reproducibility.
